Rice Riots in Shanghai
Received Hunday, 9.50 p.m. SHANG&AI, Nov. 7. Rice riots broke out in Shanghai yesterday as the priee skvrocketed following tbe ending of economic controls. Several uniformed mep held up a cart load ' of rice in Zikawei subprb, while in two other incidents large crowds mobbed rice shops. The prioe soared withip 24 hours from a ceiling of 23 gold yuan per picu] to betwe,en 2(10 and 280. Even at tbe new prohibitive level, rice is virtually pnobtainable. Thq price of cigarettes also dopbled within tbe afternoon, while tfie price of English language newspapers doubled for tfis second time in less than a week. O
