Britain Has Important Part To Play
Preaching at the Rememhrance Pay sqrvice , in st„ Andrew's presbyterian Church, Levin, yesterday, D'r. J, D. Salmond said that he believe'd that Britain had a most jmportant part to play in leading the world to stability and peace. The reason for this was that the life of the British people was" deeply rooted in the Ohristian tradition aird in ohristian standards, These had given them a strong morale during the crisis of the war and would sustain them during the trying days of peacetime reconstruction. He also pointed out •that a great many of Britain's leaders in crisis times had been men qf Strong Ohristian eharacter and conviotion. Discussing . the place of the ohurch in the community, DrSahiiond said that one of the Church's functions was to serve as a. restraining influence in community life, thus helping to keep evils that woul'd devastate social life at bay. It was easy to criticise the Church for what it did not do, but when its influence was removed all kiflds of evils grow unchecked and community standards were consequently lowered, "We don't alwaya realise," said Dr. Salmond, fthe extent to which the ordinary deoeneies of life are mainta.ined by the work and witness of the Ohurch."
