Council Wants Children To See Royal Party
The desire that all local school children should see the Royal visi-* tors next year was expressed. by members of the Shannon Borough Council at their fortnightly meeting this week. The matter arose following the town clerk, Mr. J. T. Bovis, reading a letter from the Internal Affairs Department advi'sing that the route to be taken by the Royal .party from Palmerston North to Levin was to be via Foxton. Cr. V. J. Bateman was the first to express the desire that all school children and perhaps other loyal subjects from Shannon should be given the opportunity to visit Palmerston North, or Wellington for preference, to see the Royal party.. Cr. Bateman recalled that when other members of the Royal Family visited New Zealand provision was made for the school children to visit a city, but as the party was only passing through Palmerston North, ihe suggested that an attempt be made for local visitors- to go to Wellington. After the Royal party had passejd maybe ..arrangemenjte could be made for the local school children to inspect H.M.S. Vanguard. Several other members of the council expressed the desire that arrangements should be attempted, and it was decided to appoint Cr. Bateman and the town clerk to confer with the School Committee with a view to coming to some combined arrangement. It was pointed out that the Foxton School Committee had made arrangements for their children to visit Shannon if the route was to be via this town. It is to be hoped that the council's effort will be taken up by other ' organisations and the school children given the opportunity of visiting Wellington, if this at all possible, to see . the Royal visitors and perhaps • inspect one of the Empire's famous ships.
