Battle To Quench Fire In Coal Ship
Received Friday^..9.50 p.m. v MELBOURNE, Nov. 5. After a desperate battle by the erew, lires in coal-carrying holds on the British freighter, PoiJ Vercheres, which is en route from the United Ivingdom, to Australia, have been brought under eontrol. The vessel, which was divert- • ed to Adelaid'e vthen the fire broke out, is now proceediug to her original destination, Melbourne. The vessel has a coal cargo of 8500 tons' consigned frofii the United Kingdom for Melbourne.' Smoke was lioUced coming from No. 2 hqld as the vessel was erossing the Bight and soon afterwarcls fire broke out in No. 1 hold. The hatches were battened down and air vents closed and the ship ^vas lieaded for. Adelaide. The seaiuen pumped steam from the ship 's boi'ers into the holds in an attempt to slifle the blaze.
