Moderate Rainfail During October
1 1 ** — While there was' any amount of variety in the weather experienced in Otaki during last month, figures supplied by Mr. F. H. Critchley, of Tasman Beach, reveal that the totai rainfall fell far short of that recorded the previous year. The total was 388 points, compared with 674 points in 1947. Rain' fell on 15 days this year as against 20 last October. %The highest fall recorded, seemingly as a matter of course, had to be at the start of Labour weekend, one inch falling on the evening of the '22nd, and almost half the total rain that fell during the mOnth came down from the Friday to the Tuesday. Typical October westerlies prevailed throughout the month, on many occasions reaching gale force, and variety was provided by one slight earthquake shock being recorded, plus two electrical storms. The Tararuas received a fairly generous coating of snow on the 17th, followed by a frost, which disappeared quickly. Several early crops of beans and tomatoes received a setback following the frost and the severe wind buffeting they received.
