State School Committee Meets

The monthly meeting of the Otaki State School Committee was held on Tuesday night. Mr. H. Tay- j lor occupied the chair. and there were also present Messrs. W. Calwell, H. B. Edhouse, L. G. Gimblett, A. G. Kirkwood, A. Lumley, H. Parrant, N. Taylor an'd J. E. James (headmaster) . A vote of appreciation was accorded Mr. H. Taylor for his gift of a marble slab to complete the War Memorial at the school,-- and the Levin Playreaders for their kind offer to stage a three-act play, "Sarah Simple," in Otaki, the proceeds to be in aid of school funds. The headmaster's report on school matters was as follows: — "I regret to report the exclusion from school of one class because of a positive case of poliomyelitis. Dr. Furness, together with nurses, carried out - a routine examination during October. The number on the roll as a't October 29 was 215 boys and 202 girls. The average attendance was 91 per cent. Mr. B. Crowley is relieving while Mr. W. H. Townrow is on leave. Miss L. Cockrell has resigned to take up a position on promotion, and Mr. R. J. Taylor has applied for the B grade position and been accepted. "At the last meeting of the Home and School Association Mr. N. A. Byrne, of the Horowhenua College, gave a splerrdid address which was much appreciared by those present. The meeting of the association on Tljursday will be in the form of a card evening and social function. "Calf judging is to take place on November 19 and the flower show will be heM at the school on November 25. I wouid appreciate the approval of the committee to subscription lists being Sent out for funds for prizes. The grounds and buildings are still being kept in excellent order. With the commencement of warmer -weather cricket, baseball, longball, volley ball and tennis have begun. It ,is hoped to hold inter-class and school games. The supply of material received is appreciated. To 'date the sum of £311 8s 9d has been banked, representing 1178 deposits. Recently a pupil cut his foot on a broken bottle, which had been thrown over the fence from Mill Road. This was a despicable act, and whoever was responsible -deserves the severest censure."
