Officer's Swim Helps Rescue Of 1300 People

Reeeiyed Tuesday, 10.45 a.m. SINGAPORE, Nov. 1. A British naval offieer from the destroyer Cossack was largely responsijble for the rescue of over 1300 persons aboard the wrecked Chinese troopship Ying Lung, which went ashore at MEasu Bay, Formosa. The5" offieer swam from the shore to uick up buoys and lines thrown from the wrecked shjp in raging seas, \ The Cossaek's crew, after erecting jackstays and life lines, rescued 1 370 chinese soldiers and 40 civilians, including 12 women and six children, before the exhausted ratings, who had been working ifi water up to their ehins, were withdrawn. One jackstay and a life line' was left to the wreck^for the crew who remained aboard.
