Growth Of Hemlock In Levin Brings Comment
Hemlock, one of the deadJiest noxious weeds, is growing freely in iparts of the borough, "accordhig to imembers of the Levin School Committee, who* commented on- this fact at the usual monthly meeting last night. The matter was raised by one of the members, Mr. W. A, Whiteman. Hemlock was growing very high, up to three feet in some cases, to the rear of a building in Oxford Street, near the railway line, he said. Many children were in the habit of playing in the area and it could be very dangerous, He instanced a case recently where a child died from eating this poisonous weed. "Warning the children about it is sometimes more dangerous than not saying anything," said Mr. D. P, Todd, "They become curious land might just 'try some.' " * The committee could draw the • j attentipn of the Levin Borough j Council to the matter, suggested the chairman, Mr, A. C. Kennerley. i "In Kawiu Road the hemlock is j growing beuter than grass," comjmented Mr. R. Long. | After further discussion it was 'decided that if the matter was Imentioned in the Press, parents | could warn their children against : touching the weed, The hope was , expressed that those responsible jfor the clearing of the areas men*tioned would attend to the matter.
