WELLINGTON, Nov. 2. Serioiijs flooding following heavy rain has occurred in the Southerji Lakes District leading to the lower Clutha- . The river trust is declaring a , , statg of ejnergency accordinsr t^. / ./ advLce received by the Prime Mini- r sfer's Department, Wellington. Other precautjohs are being taken, The main pnset of the fiood is not expected to reach Balclutha until this evening, The postmaster at Cromwell has reported that the Kawarau River was from- 14 to 18 feet above norma! and that almost all the creeks 4 were full. There has been 2| inches of rain in the last 24 hours and it is still raining, At Wanaka 3-01 inches were recorded for the 24 hours up to 8 a.m, and at Makarora Wharf 5.09 inches fell in the same period. At Alexandra the river was 19 feet above normal and is still rising. The Kaitangata telephone exchange has been instructed to observe continuous attendapce until further notice.
