Big Demand At Sale For Fruit And Vegetables
Messrs. Townsend and Paul, 'Ltd., fruit and produce merchants, • Wellington, report that during the past week there has been a very strong 'demand for" all varieties of fruit and vegetables, % heavy consignments of grapefruit have now eased, the demand and values are accordingly 'down. Hot house tomatoes are coming to hand more freely but there is still a strong demand. In the vegetable ;section all lines are in keen en[quiry. Heavy yardings of poultry !have been offered and values are ■firm witn a good demand. Last week's quotations are as follows:—
Fruit: N.Z. grapefruit, 6s to 12s bushel; sweet oranges, Meyer lemons, mandarins, ceiling price; tree tomatoes, 18s to 35s box; hot house tomatoes, 2s 9d to 3s 3d per pound; passion fruit, 4s 6d to 5s 6d dozen. Vegetables: Asparagus, lOd to |ls 6d per pound; beans, hot house, 3s to 3s 6d per pound; beetroot, 12s [to 16s; sprmg, 16s to 30s per case;lcabbagee, ceiling price; cauiiflow'ers, 14s to 25s sack; 8s to 14s p.er icase; carrots, ceihng price; icucumbers, ls 3d to ls lld each; kumeras, choice, 8s to 15s bag; |!ettuce, choice, 7s to 13S; others, 2s ito 6s; leeks, 9s to 14s per case; ipeas, choice, lld to ls 4d; others, 6d to lOd per pound; silver beet, 6s to 13s; spinach, 2s to 8S all cases; pumpkins, triumble, parsnips, both ceiling; rhubarb, v5s to 11s; swedes, ceiling price; mint, 6d to lOd per burich; parsley, 4d to 8d per bunch; new potatoes, 2£d to 3-2-d per pound.
