One of the best performances of the day was the victory of the New Zealand horse Hbwo in the Hotham Handicap. He carlied 9.12 and was always favourite. Running to the front a furlong from home, Howe went on to def eat Fresh Boy by a length and a-quarter with the outsider« Hongmeng nearly two lengths away third.
