War Memorial Carnival
Although the main effort in the Shannon 5 War Memorial Carnival will not take place until February of next year, the official opening of the carnival was held on Thursday evening, when there was a fair attendance at the Druids' Hall. Dancing occupied the early part of the evening and at about 9.30 p.m. a short concert programme was presented. The artists were Miss T. Quinn (humorous recitations), Master John Elliott (Irish jig), Mr. F. O. Burtt (vocal numbers) and Miss B. Young (humorous recitations) . Following the concert programme the M.C., Mr. J. D. Campbell, called upon the Mayor (Mr. D. A. Fitzgerald) to introduce the two young ladies who had been chosen as the queens, Mr. Fitzgerald said it was indeed a- pleasant duty to introduce two such charming young ladies to the public, and he congratulated the committees on their choice. He stated that he did not think it would be possible to select two more popular girls from the district. Mr. Fitzgerald also congratulated the committees on the keen interest Which they were taking in the appeal. At this stage the Mayor introduced Miss Margaret MacLean and Miss Joyce Woodmass, the town and country queens respectively, and concluded by eipressing the hope that the. public would "give both young ladies their support. ; r ' : : : . Mr. R. R. Lind; chairman 'of the War Memorial : , Hall COfrimittee, was then .ihtrodticed and he out-' linfid the' seasons wh^ it h,ad been decided to postpoiiei • the main' effort in the carnival until February. Mr. Lind said that last Tuesday evening he was approached by the two committees and asked if he would) call an urgent meeting. This was done that ' same night and he was able to hear the suggestions put forward. The main reasons for the postponement were because of the very unfavourable weather at this time of the year and the fact that the farming community was now very busy and could not give the committees its full Support. It was decided to allow each committee to carry on with small functionsrin the meantime, but to withhold the main effort until February. It was also" pointed out that it was proposed to hold 'a gala day at the weekend, but those organisations, such as the marching teams and others who were helping were just preparing for the opening of their Seasons, and the time was very inconvenient. A suitable band' was also unobtainable. It was the opinion of both committees that if the main effort was held over until better weather prevailed and - other bodies were able to assist, the results would be more favourable. The War Memorial Committee had agreed to, this suggestion. However, the period would be used to get the two committees organised and small functions could be held in the meantime. Mr. Lind then appealed to those present to: assist in every way possible a's the appeal was & very worthy one. It was to be hoped that all organisations and citizens would give their very, best in support of it. Mr. Lind concluded by extending ' thanks , to the artists who had supplied the concert items and congratulated the two young ladies who had been selected as the queens.- He wished both a successful and happy time during the bright carnival' days ahead. Mr. W. €. Higgie, chairman of the town committee, and. Mr. J. D. Campbell, chairman of the country committee, endorsed Mr. Lind's remarks tliat the appeal was a very worthy one and asked for the support of the public for either of the queens so that the Shannon and District War Memorial Hall could be built after the first appeal. Following a delightful ciipper, dancing was enjoye'd until a late hour.
