The monthly meeting of the Otaki Seate Scnooi committee was neia on Tuesday, wheri the chairman, Mr. H. Tay.or, presraed. liiere was aiso presenr Messrs. H. B. Eahouse, W. A. Caiwell, L. G. (j-mio.t-'bL, A. G. Kirkwooa, A. Lunixey, N. 'laylor and W. \Vnson. Mr. Caiwejii was appointed as second representative on the Horowhenua School Committees' ana n,'uucaaonai Association. Srnith as associate juuge was conIfirmed and pieasure was expressed at t'ne very good a„verage attendance at. the school. Headmaster's Report Mr. J; iu. James subnntted his report as follows: "The number on tne roli as at O.ctoner 1 was 418, cne average attenuance being 382, representing 91 per cent. There have been 16 admissions this term and nine withdrawals. The number on whicn the school will be graded for 1948-49 is , 418, an increase of 20 on last year. The general health of pupils remains good, 'although some children are suffering from colds. The district nurse, Mrs. Shewry, and Nurse ' Ellot, visited the school for the ! pre-examination of the children , for the medical officer's visit on jOctober 13, 14 and 15. Parents are jinvited to attend at ithe medical inspection on these days. Mr. Barnett, agriculture instructor, and Miss Blumhardt, art specialist, were at the school during Septemiber. j "Owing to the shortage of relieving teachers, the Training Gollege i is releasing some students_ to fill Ivacancies, and Miss S. Grice has ,'joined the staff. Miss B. Richards relinquishes her position on Friday next to be married. On Friday last the' school presented to the parents a project on foods of the world, prepared during the i first f our weeks of this term. Excellent work was displayed, the ! visitors remarking on the hig'n quality of the arts and crafts sections. Materiafe/has been., regeiys- » [ ed for' the readi'ng tables and Mr. iL. Walsh, the caretaker, has begun their manufacture. The buildings and grounds are still being kept in excellent order, but the school mowers need attention. "The Home and School Association will hoid its next meeting on October 14, when an address will be given by Mr. N. A. Byrne, principal of the Horowhenua College. "To date the sum of £282 has beep banked through the school savings accounts, over 1000 deposits having been made to get this total sum. The number of children definitely taking part in this year's calf rearing competition is nine seniors and five juniors. May I suggest that the committee nominate Mr .N. Smith as associate judge for the calf judging. Otaki's entrants will be judged on Friday, November 19, at 1.30 p.m. The date fixed for the flower show is Thursday, November 25."
