Levin To Get Another State Housing Contract

Thirty-five additional Stat? houses will shortly b»e built op k sub-division in Queen Street East; Levin, and negotiations - are • in train by tfhe Residential Copstruction CompAny, which is at present erecting a block of 22 units in Winchester' Street, tio obtain the contract. ' • The mass production . methods being used by the company have resulted in rapid progress with its present contract, ' the whole. ' blpck' will be completed about Cnrist-' mas. When finished, these units; will hecome part of a group of nearly 40 houses in the one subdivision. With the 35 to be built in Queen Street East, a total of ' 75 new houses will have been completed in less than a year — and if the • rapid work displayed so far by finis company is any indication, the ' Queen Street site will be finished well before the anniversary of the beginning of the Winchester Street block. 1 • ' Since a representative of thiss' newspaper visited the lattet site a little more . than six weeks ago, all but three of the 22 units in the block have been erected and . d. large percentage of them are awaiting interior work. In the5 first five weeks the firm had laid the , fouhdations and erected the frarhework for nine houses, and to three of these, the roof' and ex'r fcerior covering had been added, while two others had the outside covering on. In the past six weeks the work has gone ahead rapidly. Flooring has been laid in nearly all of those originally inspeoted and roofing and outside coverings have been affixed to the majority of the remainder, while a further ten units have been erected. The work would have been further advanced if minor hold-ups had not been experienced, said the foreman, Mr. J. D. Littlejohn, ye'steray. Weather-boards - and flooring were the' main worry, he added. Apart from these. material shortages, the unusually .frequent rain experienced recently " had tended i|o slow the work down. He was quite confident that the tenants would be in the houses"round about Christmas time." It will not be long before the land development section of the Public Works Department will be called in to form the circular road which runs through the block. When completed, the sub-division will be a very • attractiye part of Levin.
