Chinese Leave On Visit To Their Homeland
Practically t'he whole of the Chinese community in Levin gathered at the railway station on Tuesday evening to farewell two families who left for Auckland, where the'y were to connect with a plane for Sydney and thence to Canton, China. Also travelling on the express were between 40 and 50 Chinese who are also making a return visit to their homeland. A large number of - Chinese had gathered to farewell them at the Wellington station. The two local families are King Kong Fok and his wife and' three children, Milie, a daugtiter, and Mill and Wallie, all pupils of the Convent School and Ohg Lee Kwok anid his wife and their three small children. Mr. Fok is an uncle of Mr. Peter Young, a fruiterer, of Oxford Street. Mr. Young said today that the two local families, like the others, were going back to trace relatives ind fi'iends with ^"hom they had
lost touch since the war m China,. and also to attend to their private interests in Canton. Many of their families and friends had had their homes bombed durihg the war. Ih the case of his uncle and friend, their wives had come out to New Zealand to join their husbands when the first bombs began to fall in Canton at the beginning of the war in China. Of 'his uncle's children, Mille and Mill had been born in China, but the three children of his friend had been born in New Zealand. Although his uncle's children we:re looking forward to the trip, they were very sorry to part for a while from the many friends they had made at the Convent .School and in Levin.
