Appeal For Broadcast of Old Vic Theatre

WELLINGTON, Oct. 5. Mr. M. H. Oram, discussing the vote for the broadcasting aceount in the House of Representatives, asked if the Old Vic Company was subsidised by the Governmbnt in any way and could not arrangement be made for broadcasting a performanee for the benciit of those who were unahle to attend or seeui-e a tieket. Mr. F. W. Doidge supported _ Mr. Oram in this request. ; Mr. Jones, replying, said the company had receive.d no grant or assistauce from the Governnvent. It would 'be a difficult task to broadcast a threehour performanee from a theatre but he had not lost sight of the pOssibility. He would like £o arrange a broadcast before the company left New Zealand. Mr. Jones said every eneouragement was being given to New Zealand aftists, some of whom were touring all the 1 broadcasting stations in the eountry. To Mr. K. J. Holyoake "who made a plea for the retention of the Dad and Dave programmes, Mr. Jones said he would do his best as he knew these programmes reminded the honourable member of where he came from — the blackblocks. Mr. Osborne: It's Mabel he's interested i«, Mr. Jones, answering other members, said the broadcasting service knew it had sooner or later to bnild a Broadcasting House in Wellington and* to build suitable premises for the stations in the various centres too. Many stations today were housed .in rented premises. .
