Higher Price For Season's Wheat

WELLINGTON, Oct. 1. A payment of 8s 6d per bushel f.o.b. for wheat harvested in the 1948-49 season has been dec-ided upon by the Government, said the Minister of Iiidustries and Commerce (Hon. A. H. Nordmeyer) today. The price*represents an increase of (5d per bushel above the 8s payable for last season 's harvest and is intended to compensate growers for higher production costs incurreu, including wage increases, purchase of fertiliser at the unsubsidised price ahd higher tractor running and mainteiiance costs as compared with the previous season. An increase of 2d per bushel in the growers' maximum price for barley and 4(1 per bushel for white oats for crops harvested in the 1948-49 season, was also announced. Mr. Cullen said the increases had been granted to cover increased costs incurred in the production of those crops for the coming s.eaeon. The increases were not as great as those in the ease of wheat since oats and barley being spring-sown crops had already been granted price increases to cover increased costs of labour and fertiliser for the 1947-48 season which did not apply to wheat until the 194849 season. An extra allowance for white oats had been made to cover the added cost of stack-threshing.
