Open Season For Anglers Started Today
This morning saw the start of the open fishing season, when the disciples of Sir Isaac Walton set out to test their skill with that of the wily trout. Statistics disclose that during the past 40 years, 20,000,000 trout, weighing more than 20,000 tons, have been landed by New Zealand' anglers. A local enthusiast who is an authority on the subject said today that conditions this morning were not the best for the fly fisherman, although the lower ; waters might have been good for th'e minnow and bully fisherman. "* The prospects for the season, he said, were not bright. Although the Acclimatisation Society , had.; liberated a large number .of ' yeafvlings. and fry in the local rivers, st seemed to be of no avail. No doubt the reason for the lack of fish in these rivers was the continuously moving metal and their continuously changing courses.
