Progress Made in Fight Against Cancer

WELLINGTON, Sept. 14. The progress made by the Dominion X-ray and radlum laboratory at Christchurch, was shown in a report read at the annual meeting of the New Zealand branch of the British Empire Cancer Campaign Society today. Negotiation* for the acquisition of a suitable building for the laboratory were taking place, it was stated, and these were "still in progress. If the ' negotiations were successful, a .building close to Canterbury -Coliegc and otherwise satisfactory, would be available. Because of the incrfeasing value oi the work of the laboratory to New Zea land, an increased subsidy to cover part of its work, had been granted by the medical research council of the Government. A meeting of .the central committee of.the society had been held in Wel lington to consider detailed proposals for the medical and research committee aiid it' had been decided that while the laboratory should i ontinue to be uudei the control of a sub-committee of the Cauterbury division of the society, its .work should be assisted by the formation 0f a special technical and advisory committee composed of four radio therapists together with the professor of physics at Canterbury College aua , director of research at the society 's biological laboratory in the Otago Medical School. The present work should be continued under the direction of Mr. G. E. Roth in regard to therapeutic plants, radioactive substances and research. It was decided that as soon as possible work should be extended to cover tlie control of all diagnostic X-ray [jlaxits in New Zealand. 'These and other proposals had been adopted and a doputation had later waited on the Direetor-Geueral of Health wlio had given an undertaking that the xjl'oposals would be submitted lo the Minister of Health.
