• WELLINGTON, Sept. 14. "This proseeutitm is indicative of the department 's -ipoiicy i ■ • of • .puiisuiug compulsory uuionisnx to great lengths," said counsel for a Wellington company which was prosecuted by the Department of Labour in the 'Magistrate 's Court today. The department clhimed a penalty of £20 from the defendant compan;y ' for employing two men aged 1 75 and G7 while they were not members of an iudustrial union. Counsel said the eompany liad been faced with closing- down unless they get help. "The seeretary's father in his 76th year came out of retirement to help the lirm, " he added. Both he and the other man, who was also retired, declared that they would leave if forced to pay uniou fees. 4 4 The def eetion of these two is not going to wreck the union?" asked Mr. A. A. McLachlan, S.M., adding that it would be a tragedy if a uniou broke down' because there were not enough to carry on. "I do not tliink the law should upset these two old gentleinen, " said the Magistrate, who dismisesd the claim for the pena'lty on the ground : that the breaeh was excusable. He ordered that the current year's union fees should be paid by the eompany.
