Shannon School Matters
The monthly meeting of the Shannon School Committee was held in the school on Mon'day evening when Mr. A. E. Jeffrey presided over Messrs. L. J. Bowler (secretary), E. H. Barber, F. E. Bradey, F. J. Lucinsky, R. E. Vinsen and Mrs. C. Stern. The headmaster, Mr. F. O. Burtt, was also present. . As three members, Messrs. Jeffrey and Free an'd Mrs. W. Easton, had recently suffered bereavements the meeting stood in silence as a mark of respect. It was resolved that a letter of thanks be sent to Messrs. Kilmister Bros.- for their kind 'donation of a selection of native trees to be planted in the school grounds. It was reported thgt the' vacant section adjoining the headmaster's residence ha"d been ploughed and the committee would have a working bee in the near future to pflant the section in potatoes. Headmaster's Report The headmaster, in his report for the month of August, stated that the school roll stood at 148 boys and 137 girls, a total of 285. The atten'dance for the ' month averaged 136 boys and 129 girls. There were six pupils admitted and four withdrawn. "The district nurse carrie'd out her routine inspection of the pupils during the month. Arbor Day was observed by the planting of a large number of native trees in an area which will be developed into a native section for the school. Thanks are due to Messrs. H. and F. Kilmister, who donated the trees. The reconditioning of the school desks has now been completed and the seating at the swimming baths has been renewed. The school is grateful to Messrs. Free, Lucinsky and Bradey for donations of boxes of plants, an'd to Mr. J. Raper for the gift of a concrete bird bath. "The term ended on Friday, August 20, and resumed on Monday, September 6. At the en'd of the term the children organised a sonoert among themselves and tnad'e a small admission charge in arder to raise fun'ds for shrubs for the garden. As the result of their jffort the sum of £2 0s 6d was tianded over and will be spent for the purpose for which it was rais3d. Stanley, of :he Boys' Training Centre, Levin, rhe next meeting, which will be leld on Monday, September 13, vill be a demonstration by senior pupils.
