Otaki Borough Council Meets

The monthly meeting- of the Otaki Borough' Council -was held on Wednesday riight, the Mayor, Mr. C. F. Atmore, presiding. There were also present Councillors N. D. Anderson, E. Cook, H. W. Haka raia, Gi McKiniey, J. Retter, and the town clerk, Mr. Alex. Wilspn. Prior to the commencement of the meeting, Mr. Atmore ma'de reference to the sudden death of Mrs. H. W. Hakaraia, and offered the sympathy of the council to Cr. Hakaraia, and his family. Members stoo'd in silence as a mark of respect. The report of the finance committee, that accounts totalling £126 12s 5d- be passed for payment, and that the qu'otation of Messrs. Kerslake, Biilens, and Humphrey, Ltd., for printing requirements be accepted, was approved; the works committee's overseer's reports were also approved and recommendaticns adopted. . Corrospon'dence was read and dealt with as follows: — From Miss B. I. Fieury, tendering her resignation as' junior clerk. — Received, the clerk advising that the position had been advertise'd. From M. A. Taylor, Lower Hutt, asking for resolution of the council re approval of sub-division. — Agreed that same be forwarded. From Mr. C. W. Foster, M.S.I., Civil Engineer, reporting on inspections at the proposed motor camp at Tasman Beach, and on flooding at the Post Office. — Decided to adppt recoinmendations made. From J. Hardie and Co., Ltd., Auckland, advising that the council's order for fibrolite high pressure pipes would be consigned during the present week.— - Received. From Messrs. Findlay an'd Foot; Wellington, advising that the owner ©f land desired for roa'd widening at Rangiuru is prepared to de'dicate the strip, f ree of charge, to the council, following sub-division.— A plan is to be drawn up, and the matter treated as urgent. From C. S. Falconer, chairman of Dominion Executive of United Nations' Appeal for Children, expressing thanks for the assistance to the appeal. — Received; From Sanitary . Inspector, Mr. W. J. Guinan, outlinirig certain improvements desired • if the Rangiuru motor camp was to be used during the coming ^holiday period. — Agreed that works committee attend to matters joutlined by Mr. Guinan. From the Dominion Laboratory, Wellington, fortvarding analyst's report of Otaki water supply, which. stated the water appears to be of satisfactory quality. — Received. From Mr. C. G. Anderson, postmaster, Otaki, acknowledging communication re telephone pole in Kapiti Lane, and advising that the matter is receiving attention. It was reported to the meeting that the removal of pole asked for had been attended to. Applications for extraordinary water supply from H. W. Anketeli, Rangiuru, and from J. M. Wing, Mill Road, were granted. From Department of Lands and Survey, Wellington, forwarding sub-divisional plans; and asking for the council's consent to same. — Consent was granted. An application from G. Matulich, Otaki, for disposal of refuse by burying was granted, subject to certain conditions being complied with. From Department of Labour and Employment, Palmerston North, making recommendations, and seeking compliance with same. — Received, and to be referred to employees concerned. From the management committee of the Otaki Cricket Club, forwarding an application for the use of 'the domain from September 12, for the ensuing season, and offering assistance in the preparation of the wicket; also suggesting a sum the club would be willing to pay towards the cost of maintaining the wicket. — Application granted but councillors were of the opinion that the amount offered was insufficient, and double the amount offered is to be asked. The council will then1 undertake to prepare the pitch once a week, provided the assistance and co-operation of members of the Cricket Club is f orthcoming. An application from J. P. J.ensen for a taxi-driver's license was granted. - An application from the secretary of the Tuis' intermediate marching team for permission to hold a snop day on September 10 was granted. . Present "at the' monthly meeting of the works committee held at the Council Chambers on September 6 were Councillors Retter (in the chair), Hakaraia, Cook and McKiniey. It was recpmmended that the overseer's report be adopted. That' the application of the Horowhenua Rugby Union for the use of the domain for a football match on September 25 be declined. That the Mangapouri Creek be cleaned and the cpst charged to the respective owners.
