Footpath In Liverpool Street Sought

§eeking the formation of a footpath along the northern side of Liverpool Street, a deputation headed by Mr. N. Thornley and comprising Messrs. J. Squires, J. McLeod, Fergusson and Benge waited on the Levin Borough Council at its fortnightly meeting on Monday. night. After the claims of the -deputation had been heard by- the council it was decided that consideration would be given the request. Putting the egse for the deputation, Mr. Thornley pointed out that the . area which it was thought should be served with a footpath -was a substantiafly built up one, and the fact that the road was a stock route n^de it a difficult and dangerous one for persons to walk on. The intersection of Liverpool and Cambridge Streets was a dangerous one, and children w.alking on the road' were a constant worry to motorists^ Many other factors such as the stock, sale yards traffic and a nearby railway crossing all had to be carefully watched bv drivers approaching the intersection, It was imperative that the full length of the street be seryed with a footpath, said another speaker, Mr. McLeod, when supporting Mr. Thornley. He had once seen 50 bullocks on the road. A live hedge and high trees obscured a driver's vision at the intersection, said Mr. Squires. Mr. Burdekin: Would it meet the case if residents were asked to keep the hedge cut low and efforts made to have clear visibility? It was pointed out by another councillor that it was unlikely that cutting the hedge low would help a great deal. He knew an elderly motorist w.ho deliberately avoided the corner because he feared the danger there, said Mr. Squires. Cr. C. Sherwood, supporting the deputation, said that the job in Liverpool Street was long overdue, The residents there had had to put up with bad conditions for a lopg- time. The Mayor said that it might be possible to lay a metal footpath mean while to serve the residents. After further discussion the deputation was informed that the .application would ^receive further consideration.
