Coyyright)
i Received Tuesday, 11 a.m. LONDON, September 6. The Wai- Minister, Mr. E. Shinwell, addressing the jTrade Union Congress, forecast that the next general election ' Would be a bitter fight for Labour's existence. He said that the whole Labour movement must prepare with the utmost loyalty for the coming struggle.
"We must not pull punches1 hecause our opponents will stop at nothing. Another Labour victory will enable us to consolidate our gains aird push onward with further beneficial social and industrial schemes. The election will be a conflict of ideas in wlrich the electors will have to choose between Toryism's old-fashioned beliefs or modern concepts, which, however novel they appear, are essential to world progress." Mr. Shinwell, describing Marshall ai'd as a temporary measure, asked for higher nroduction. Economic recovery was not just-
laround the corner. There were 'many years of strenuous and I'patient effort ahead. I* "Criticism of nationalisation [schemes must not disturb us or 'distract our attention from essenitial needs. We cannot wipe out immediately the many years of neglect for which capitalism and wrong political ideals are largely jresponsible. We cannot realise •our social objective by injecting a ! social content into our nationalisation schemes. We must be ready to make more experiments and must not be detefred by opposition or intimidated by poli- , ticians with axes to grind."
