Personal The Mayoress, Mrs. D. A. Fitzgerald, left on Friday on a visit to relatives in Christchurch. Alterations to Library Extensive alterations are to be carried out at the Shannon Publie Library, commeneing. on September 18, when both the library andv the reading room -will be closed for two weeks. Cr. H. L. Norris, chairman of the library committee, reporting at a recent meeting of the Shannon Borough Council, stated' that a number of new books had been ordere'd for the new library. It was resolved by the council that as the subscriptions fall due, all newspapers be discontinued. , Marehing Practice A practice of the local marehing teams is to be held in the domaih this evening, weather ^permitting, when all members are requested to attend. Any girls interested in * joining the teams are also invited to be present, as the coach, Mr. S. Chester, will outline5the marehing programme for the coming season. Once the teams become fully organised, the senior coach of the Horowhenua Marehing Association will visit Shannon to demonstrate the" march to be used in all competitions during the coming season. Old Identity Passes The death of Mr. R. Terry, at the age of 84 years, removes one who was well-known in Shannon some 30 years ago, when he was employed by a local grocery firm as a delivery man. The late Mr. Terry was to be seen out in all weathers with his horse and cart, and his trustworthy and obliging manner made him highly esteemed by all. Predeceased by his wife some time ago, Mr. 'Terry had recently been residing with his daughter, Mrs. W. . Easton. The jiuneral of the decease'd gentleman took place last Friday, when the large gathering and the many beautiful floral tributes bore witness to the high esteem in whieh he was held in the district. Tne services at the Anglican Church and at the graveside were conducte'd by Rev. M. J. S. Wheeler. .Popular Couple Favewelled 1 Mr. G. F'itzgerai'd, of the Bank of New Zealand staff, has received advice of his transfer on promotion to Te Aro, Wellington. Mr. and Mrs. Fitzgerald, who leave Shannon tomorrow morning, -will be greatly missed by a large circle of friends. As members of various sports bodies in the 'district, Mr. and Mrs. Fitzgerald have taken ari active part in the social life of the town and , have earned the esteem of all by their sportsman^ ship and willingness to help at all times. . These departing citizens have been busily. engaged in a round of farewell gatherings over the past few nights. On Friday evening they were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. H. Curran and Mrs. Curran, Senr., at a social evening, and last evening they were entertained by members of the Shannon Badminton Club at an evening in the Druids' Hall. When Mr. and Mrs. Fitzgeral'd leave Shannon they will carry with them the best wishes of their many local friends for every happiness in their new home.
