HANAN SHIELD GAME
OAMARU, S'ept. 5. For the first time siiice the Hanan •Ihield was presented in 1945, wlien South Canterbury took the trophy from Ashburton, the original holders, Soutn Canterbury suffered defeat in a shield match, being defeated by North Otagc G-xi.il at Oamaru on Saturday. The match Avas playcd in a sea of mud under heavv rain, the winning points coming from a penalty goal by J. Halvorsen. The lighter and more mobile Nortli Otago forwards outclassed thcir heavier opponents. In a previous Hanan Shield match tliis season, North Otago held South Canterbury to a draAv, 9-all.
