New Cut At Mouth Of Waitohu River

Yesterday morning saw' the commencement of the muchdiscussed. problem of attempting to remedy the flood water trouble of settlers whose holdings, are adjacent to the "WAitohu River as it flows on its circuitous course to the sea, from Messrs. Simcox Brothers' property, aboye the Otaki golf links, through properties bordering Convent Road, down through the College Trust Mission property, and via Messrs. Tews Brothers' farms. The engineer to the Manawatu Catchment Board, Mr. P. Evans, is direeting the work of making a new cut from the sea via. the route adjacent to the Tasman Beach motor camp, in the direction of Tews Brothers' farms. With the removal of willows and other encumbering roots a little further up, and the proposed deepening and cleaning of the channel of this troublesome stream, preliminary - steps are under way to greatly increase the iall towards the mouth. When the new cut is made, the mouth of the river will flow practicaiiy straight out to the sea again, instead of wmding away up nor th for almost half a mile as it has been doing.
