Vegetables Scarce; Prices Remain Firm
Messrs. Townsend and Paul, Ltd., fruit and produce merchants, Wellington, report that during the past, week supplies of fruit and vegetables have been particularly scarce, values accordingly being very firm. In the poultry section there is a particularly " strong demand for prime birds. Quotations are: — Vegetables: Cabbage, savoy, ceiling price; spring, 4s to 10s per case; silverbeet; carrots, parsnips, swedes, ceiling price; pumpfcins, triumble, 17s to 24s per super sack; cauliflowers, best, 20s to 30s; others, 5s to 18s per sack; rhubarb, clioice", 25s to 28s; others, 16s to 20s per case; lettuce, . Hawke's Bay choice, 20s t Xf 28s; others, 8s to 18s per case; spinach, 12s to 20s; leeks, 23s to 28s per case; forced rhubarb, 2s bunch; peas, ls 2d to ls 7d per lb.; brussels sprouts, 20s to 31s per bag; artichokes, 8s per sugar bag. Fruit: New Zealand grapefruit, 10s to 12s 6d; sweet oranges, 10s to 17s bushel case; Meyer lemons, 8s to '9s; tree tomatoes, 9s to 15s; passion fiaiit, 30s to 45s; Chinese gooseberries, 40s to 49s per half case. Flowers: Poppies, art, 4s to 9s; tangerine, 3s to 7s 6d; daffodils, 8s to 16s; jonquils, 2s 6d to 5s 6d gross; violets, ls 6d to 4s; freesias, 4s 6d to 8s dozen bunches; carnations, 2s to 4s 6d per doz.; anemones, lOd to ls ld; boronia, ls to ls 3d per bunch.
