CHRISTCHURCH, August 31. Unless appreciable assistance 'was given the pot'ato groWers of Canterburv very soon, very small acreages would be planted next 'seasonx stated Mr. T. L. Hayman, chairman of the Sonth Canterbury potato section of Federated Fariiiers/commenting on th'e glut in the potato market. The position, he said, was very1 serious, but he was eonfidem the Gbvefnment would not let the growers down. Mr. Hayhian said there were approximately 100,000 saeks of potatoes in South Canterbury alone for which no market could be found. A survey was being made in MidCanterbury. and North Canterbury and it was expected that this would reveal a surplus of -200,000 sacks. The surplus would represent approximately 20,Q0il tons of potatoes, valued at more than £200,000. Mr, Hayman said that without some assistance a great number of growers would have no 'finance and no inclination to plant next year's erop. He still had hopes that, the Government would sueceed in finding some outlet for the potatoes. _
