Interest in the activities oi Otaki cyclists has quickened considerably since the announcement that the 50-mile junior road race .is to start at Otaki on October 9. There was a crowd of supporters to watch both the s.tart aird the finish of the weekbnd training ride, this time to Waikanae and back, a distance of 22 miles. A field of 15 riders assembled, their marks being as follows: — D. Smith (scr.) ; A. Brooks, T. Searancke an'd W. Wilton (1 min.) ; G. Juiius, T. Mathie and D. Hurley (3 mins.) ; B. Walsh and N. Mudgway (4 mins.) ; R. Best and R. Hornig (5 * ins.) ; W. Walsh and R. Bartosh (6 mins.); F. Dakin and J. Hodgetts (8 mins.). The two four-minute. men, B Walsh and Mudgway, rode really well and at the turn were the leaders from Hornig and Juiius. On ' the home run B. Walsh, Hornig and Mudgway were in front through Te Horo, closely followed by Juiius and Brooks, with Searancke, who suffered from cramp, making up leeway. At Otaki Railway B. Walsh dropped his co-markers and went on to win handsomely from Hornig, with Mudgway close behind. Smith, who was the scratch man, did well to catch the minute markers early, and pedailed strongly all the way to gain .fastest time of 59 mins. 45 secs. Second fastest time went to Walsh 61 mins., and third to Juiius 61 mins. 30 secs. All junior riders are reminded to be registered before the big 50-mile race on October 9.
