"An average gain of 900 new settlers ovqr the pas't three years, can hardly be aecepted as a policy designed adetpiately to liuild up the sparse population of the country," states the annual report of the Dominion Settlement and Population Association. Declaring that the housing shortage was 110 answer to tlie, issue, the report says housing nevei would be overtaken unless XT ew Zealaud toolc in tens of thousands of building artisans. It also points out that Australia, with its present objeetive of at least 70,000 settlers yearly, has a far greater "housing problem than New Zealand. Referring to the association 's scheine for British ehild migration, the report says that although the Minister of Immigration announced Cabinet 's approvement. in April, 1943, nothing furihor had lioen lieard of the matter.
