Guides' Association Holds Annual Meeting
There was a large attendapce of guides a.t the annual meeting of the 'Levin Girl ^Guides' Association, held in the St.* Mary's Hall recently. The attendanee- 61 adults was, hpwever, disappointing. Deputising fqr the Mayor, Mr. H. B. Burdekin, Mr. D. P. Todd pre'sided. The district' commissioner, Mrs. Kircaldie, reported qn, guiding .activities in the district, Otaki, Manakau and Levin. She gave 'an interesting account. of the various funptions she had attended in Wellington and Palmerston North while the world Chief Guide, Lady Baden Poweii, had been visiting those cities. She mentioned the commendation the Levin Guides had received during the marchpa.st in Palmerston North. The weekly meetings had been very well attended throughout the year and the roll call numbered 26, said Captain J. Chainey in her report on the activities of the first Levin Guide Company. Although it had been a short year, every5one'had worked very well and had been very keen. The company's efforts for the year had included food parcels sent to England, £8 sent to headquarters for the piano fund for Arahkia, £2 10s raised for the United Nations appeal for Children and the s ending of a Jarge collection of children's books, wool, buttons and scraps of material to the Levin Farm for oceupational therapy work. Captain Chainey then gave* a resume of the activities of the company during the year. In conclusion, she thanked all those who had helped her in any way during the vear.
The annual report of the First Otaki Company, which was formed during the. year, was presented by Miss Jarman. She gave detailS of the year's work and the forming of the company. Twenty-one g'irls were enrolled, she said. There were 21 guides on the roll of the St. Mary's Third Levin : Company who travelled from Manakau to' the meetings, said Miss P. V. Hills in her report. She said that the girls had dorie a great deal of 'badge work. Thanks were due to the commissioner and the association for their interest and help, and to the Church Hall Committee for giving tl\e use of the hall. In the' absence of Miss Hendry, Mrs. Kircaldie spoke briefiy on the activities of the Levin Brownie Pack. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows:. — President: Mrs. L. J. Hunter; vicepresident: Mrs. G. B. StoteBlandy; eommittee: Mesdames W. ■ Smaill, D. P. Todd, W, G, Phillips, A. R. Williams, T. Cheesman, W. Duguid, Hair, j. Macdonald, E. Bott, H. D. Mackay, J. Chapman, A. Haley, ;F. W. Wilson and Rathbone, Misses Chapman-Cohen and Cooper and Mr. J. B. Collett; auditor: Mr. Haley. The resignations of Mrs. V. E. Hudson and Mr. W. Benfell were , accepted with regret. Mrs. Hunter then introduced the new district commissioner for Palmerston North, Miss Read. Miss Read congratulated the companies on their reports, saying that she was particularly interested in the food parcel scheme. She spoke to the meeting on camping and outdoor activities. One of her suggestions was • that during the spring, guides should nieet in the late afternoons on week days' and go for a hike. Here, she emphasised, was the difference between guiding and other youth moyements, the stress on outdoor work. The meeting was entertained by items presented by guides and brownies. In conclusion, a vote of thanks was accorded to Mu. Todd for • his interest in the . movement.
