A certain home hints guide book of 1929 gives the following instructions for cleaning coloured silks, satins 'and woollen dresses: Four ounces of soft soap, four -ounqes of honey, the white of an egg, and a wihe-glassful of gin; mix well together, and scour the article thoroughly with a rather hard brush, afterwards rinse it in cold water, leave to drain, and iron while quite damp.
