Educational Institute Meets
There was a very good attendance of teachers at the August meeting of the Horowhenua branch of the N.Z. Educational Institute, hel'd at Levin last week, Mr. F. O. Burtt, presiding. Mr. C. E. Wiseley reported on matters that were brought before the last meeting of the committee of branches. The Education Board, it was reported, had given the committee reason to believe that the matter of truancy was to be the subject of. full investigation. The Dominion president informed Mr. Wiseley that he would be visitihg the Horowhenua branch area before the end of the present year. Mr. J. Hewitson was asked to represent Horowhenua- --at the branch secretaries' conference, to be held at Hamilton on September 1 and 2. Mr. F. O. Burtt introduced the guest speaker for the evening, Mr. G. D. Anderson, supervisor of the jNational Film Library. Mr. Ander!son ad'dressed members on visual aids in the schools, dealing with -jig-saw puzzles as applied to .geography, wood carving and ! modelling In particular. A display of models carved from benzine cases," showing the progress of housing from the early days in New Zealand through the various stages, and including a glimpse into the future, ' was extremely interesting. Mr. Anderson concluded his ad'dress by demonstratihg the use of the' film-strip projector. Mr. W. O. Neas thanked Mr. Anderson for his interesting and instructive ad'dress. A fairly lengthy discussion on superannuation took place. Eventually it was decided to send a protest to the Dominion executiv.eagainst paying back superannuation compulsorily on house allowance. Before the conclusion of the meeting Mr. Burtt thanked the ladies of the Levin School for the afternoon tea arrangements.
