Shannon Borough Matters
The fortnightly meeting of the Shannon Borough Council was held on Tuesday" evening* with .the Mayor (Mn D/A. Fitzgerald) presiding- over Gfis.. B. Clayton, .V1. "J. Bateman, R. S/Downes, C. M. cron-'quest,-an'd H. Aitchison. Apologies for absence were received from, Crs. H. L/Norris,.L. G. Sayer and C. G. Wishart. - •• . - ' Among the inward corr.espondence was' a letter from the organiser of the Combined Seamen's Institute's committee asking .per-, mission for a day to make an appeal. It was pointed. out in the letter that over 60,000 seamen from overseas vessels were entertained at the three missions during the past, year, the greater- part of the work; being done by voluntary workers, who sacrificed their evenings to make the visits of' the seamen to our ports more. pleasant. The organiser sliated that in all the appeals held this year the members of the various women's organisations in each centre had provided the collectors and had dorie excellent work in raising the necessary funds. It was proposed by Cr. Bateman that a day in September be granted and the arrangement of a date be left in the hahds of the town clerk. This was appr'oved. A letter of thanks was read from the Shannon School Committee for .providing a pedestrian crossing at the school gates. ' A loc.al resident asked permission to graze a pony in Ballance Street, it being pointed out that the pony wou,ld be suitably tethered and •would irf no way interfere with the. road or. ifootpath. It was resolved to reply stating that ■ the council could not grant the request. ! An application to erect a garage on the unused foadway from Stout and Grey Streets, was received. it was resolved to reply that as the area referred to was a surveyed road, the council could not agree to the request. The district engineer of the Public Works Department, Wellington, iri reply to the council's letter regarding the position of electric | light poles at the junction of Marigaret and Ballance Streets, said ;that the Main Highways Boarcl did •not pay for any part of the cost of 'electric lighting . in boroughs, whether on State highways or main highways. "-One hawker's lieence was granted subject to the requli-ed fee being paid to the' town; clerk. " ■ Cr. Bateman, chairman of the i building committee, reported on the i building programme within the I borough. • Permission was granted !a Vance Street resident to erect a jfowl-house at the rear of his section. ' An application was made for permission to place an army hut on a section in Stout Street. It was pointed out by thd applicant that the building would be used as a temporary buiiqing pending the e'rection of a permanent dwelling, plans for which would be prepared in the immediate future. On the motrion of Cr. Bateman, the applicdtion was granted subject to the Puilding being used as temporary
accomfnodation for twelve months only. Cr. Bateman also tabled an application ffor repairs to the dress circle of the Renown Theatre and; the installation of" door pillars, which had. been authorised by the district building controller. Permission was granted on the motion of Cr. Bateman. It . was resolved that future meetings of the council commence at 7.30 p.m. The health inspector reported that he had arranged for a shed at the rear of business premises in Plimmer Terrace to be removed. ,
