Scouts And Band Seek Site For Hall

. A deputation comprising executive officers and members of the First Otaki Boy Scouts and the Otaki Band attended the meeting of the Otaki Borough Council on Wednesday night to ask for help in the provision of a site on which to erect a hall or meeting place. Mesdames Boggs and Housiaux, and Messrs. F. Rule, N. Hannah, L. Moss, H. Taylor and A. Lumley, were the deputation, and after tne Mayor, Mr. C. F. Atmore, had welcomed them and briefly outlined the reasons for their presence, pointed out that reserves over which the council had jurisdiction were very limited. i. Messrs. Rule, Taylor, Moss and Lumley ali s.tressed the fact that quite a few months ago a site had been promised by the council, but j that difflculties had been encountered when they sought to meet the committee appointed by the council. "The position of accommodation is now very acute," said Mr. Rule. With other speakers, he asked the council to take into con-i sideiatmn that both organisatlons ' were doing a valuable service to the j community. "The scouts are training youdxs to be good citizens, and! it is imperative that we h^vei : assistance if we are to carry on. Mong ths work." j It is our duty as citizens to foster the good work oi these organ■'isations. At present they arai aimost without a place of abode, and we would like the council io ; help in finding them a home," com- ; mented Mr. Taylor, who added that 1 j Otaki had had a band for close on ■50 years, and it had always been at jthe service of the public. j «Mr. Atmore apologised for the i deiay which had taken place and expiained that other bodies had • requested that permission given be ; withdrawn until a large scheme, which it was hoped would provide amenities for all, was investigated. I Mr. Moss stated that while it was not the wish of either body represented in the deputation to break away from any central scheme, both could at times be reasonab y nolsy," and the pride of ownership would mean that much more intjrest would be shown by the scouts. Our one aim is to make happy .healthful, and.'useful citizens out of ; the boys," concluded Mr. Moss, in asking that the council carry out its flrst plan of allotting a sect-ion apart from any other scheme. l In reply, Mr-., Atmore assured the i deputation thaif the council was" ItfO"' jper cent. behind the. two bodies. | A dLcussion followed during which suggestions were forthi coming, and a plan is to be. submitted which, it is hoped, should be I satisfactory to all concerned.
