As nothing can be attempted with regard to the formation of a children's playing area at Otaki Railway until the Public Works Department comp'.ete their road widening plan, the Otaki Borqugh Council, at a meeting on Wednesday,^ agreed that the area be leased for a further term of twelve months to the present occupier. An application from the Bandoliers Marching Team, Otaki, for a street and shop day on Friday, October 22, was granted. Arising from requests by the Horowhenua Hockey Association and the Horowhenua Rugby Union, it was agreed to extend the playing time for the current season to September 11. It was announced that representative games of hockey and football had been arranged for that day. The retirement, which takesi place shortly, of Constable W. A. Calwell, was referred to when Cr. Hakaraia suggested that a public function would probably be held to mark the retirement. The Mayor agreed that if sueh a function took place he would be glad to assist. ■ The possibility of help being forthcoming from the Maori people, and from the business community, was mentioned. T'here was every possibility that the contemplated tree pianting in Moana Street could be attepipted during the next few days following the engineer's visit, it w^as. reported. This was favourably commented on.
