TIMARU. August 11. The Australian representative basketball team played its lirst mate.hes in New Zealand at Timaru today against a'eombined team of South Canterbury, Temuka, and Ashburton players, winning the seven-a-side game 52-8 and losing the nine-a-aside game 29-21. The visitors were mor.e at home in the seven-a-side match and played a fast {ind free game with a less figid interpretation of the stepping and bloc'king rules than the local players were used to. In the nine-a'-side game the comliined team played with niore conhdence under rules they knew well and beat the Australians with brilliant short passes and lightning movements aeross the court, making it difficult for their opponents to intercept. •
