Waimeha Water Supply Said To Be Inadequate

The Waimeha water supply was the subject of a great deal of discussion among members of the Horowhenya County' Council at the monthly meeting yesterday. Aqletter was received from the Waikanae Beach Progressive and Ratepayers' Association, asking the council to give consideration to a duplication of the present water supply. At the moment, and particularly during • the summer months, the existing installation was frequently unable to cope with , ithe demand's nu'de on it, and often1. : broke down. ; ; commenting, the1 chairman, Mi'.i |a. M. Colquhoun, said that it was a( yrather knotty problem." Be; som.etim.es wondered if there would be plenty of water ii it was used for the purposes it was put there for. If the society could help by

stopping people from usmg their hoses in the summertime, and more than doubling the draw-off, such action would do in the meantime, he thought. From this point, a lengthy discussion was taken in committee. A further letter from the association stated that after much search and inquiry it had been discovered that the access reserves in the Waimeha township were vested in the council, and were its responsibility. As the council was aware, these "strips" in their neglected and overgrown condition were a constant fire hazard. The letter requested the council to take steps in the future to ensurb that the danger "was minimised by the remoYal.. of the lupin ,and scrub from the reserves. It was pointed out by the chairman that these were plantation reserves, which, however, were not being maintained as such. It would cost a great deal of money to pldnt them and keep them going, he said. A point worth investigating would be to see if the Public Works Department would take them over. It was agreed that they were serious fire hazards. The matter was referred to the councillors for the ri'ding, together with the engineer, Mr. W, H. Fraser.
