Maoris Claim Land Leased By Harbour Board
1 — •» Until the Maori owners of the Papangaio Block at Foxton make legal claim for their land which is now on the north side of the Manawatu River the Foxton Harbour Board will take no action in" the matter. Before the discovery that this land was in the Papangaio BlGck the Harbour Board leased it and houses were built on the sections. The owners of the native block now maintain that the land is theirs. At a recent . meetihg of the board Mr. H. Dustin "said that it had had no right to grant the lease. By an Act of - 1924 the land accreted from. the sea belonged to the board, but not*' the part- of the- Papangaio Block which had been affeCted by the change in the course of the river. Mr. J. A. Nash (chairman) : There will be time enough to deal with the matter when the Maoris come to us. It will he years before they move. Mr. Dustin: The white man has put the whare on the Maori land. There will be a liability on someone. .
