Citizens Turn Out to Repair Roads
WELLINGTON, August 7.. Dressed in working clothea 18 meriv bers of the Lyall Bay Eesidents' Association this morning enthusiastically took up the unaccustomed tools of ihe potholea repair trade and went to work on the repair of a roadway in their suburb. They were assisted by three Bkilled workmen from the Tramways Perm.anent Way Department. TJnion delegates may: have been in the vicinity, but did not address the workers, nor make their presence known. Just before the work began, howCver, a man walked over from a car and ad- * dressed the president of the assoeiation (Mr. G. L. Bees) most abusively. The incident was not taken too seriously. It is expected that the gangs of men provided from the association's members will work on Saturdays and possibly on Sundays too, nntil late in November. For an eight-hour day eaeh man will be paid £2 7s (tax elear) and on Sundays £2 10s (tax clear). The tramway engineers who inspected the work done this morning sa^d they were impressed with the effort made and were fully satisfied with the standard of the work. The Acting-Mayor (Cr. R. L. Macalister) and Cr. E. R. Toop also visited the scene and congratulated' the workers on their effort.
