Athletic Events Begin
Received Wednesday, 11.15 a.m. LONDON, Aug. 3. A sparse crowd saw the start of the athletic events at ihe Olympic Games today. The track had recovered well after yesterday's soaking but drizzling rain. This afternoon Mel Patton (United States) won the men's 200 metres final, beating B. Ewell (United States) by inches. In the semi-fxnals of this event, John Treloar, Australia's champion, tired over the last 20 yards and fmished fourth after leading at the halfway marR. Earlier, in the other semi-final, H. McKenley (Jamaica) beat Patton by three yards. Australia's three runners qualified for the 110 metres semi-finals. Britain's 40-year-old hurdler, Donald Finlay, had the fifth heat of ' the hurdles won when he f ell two yards from the finish.
