Received Wednesday, 11.2-5 a.m. LONDON, August 3. Miss Ngaire Lane (New Zealand) qualified for the semifinal of the 100 metres women's backstroke at the Olympic Games by taking second place to Miss H. Vanderhorst (Holland) in the first heat.

The Dutch girl's time was 1 min. 18.7 secs. and Miss Lane's 1 min. 18.8 secs. The winners of the other heats broke the Olympic record of 1 min. 16.6 secs. — K. M. Harup (®)enmarkj 1 min. 15.6 secs. and J. Davies (Australia) 1 min. 16.4 secs. Miss Lane will meet Miss Harup ' in the semi-final tomorrow, and also Miss Vanderhorst and Miss S. Z. Zimmerman, who returned 1 min. 16.8 secs.
