Lepers' Sit-down Strike
Keceived Monday, S.25 p.m. MANILA, August 2. Twenty-six of .226 lepers in Ban Lzaro liospital, escapou overnight and the rest are on a sitdown striite. The lepers have been in a turmoil recently as the result of a Health Department order that all patieuts must be transferred to an isolation hospital 9 miles from Mauila. The trausfer was oiulered because, since the war tne lepe'fs have been anowed to xningle with the public. Many lepers drive jeeps about the •citv, others atteud picture thpatres and otliers. freely stroil aiong the city streets. The lepers appealed against the departnient's decision quoting sonie medical authorities who say tliere is no need for isolation, but the department refuses to reverse lts stand..
