Unaccountable Change In Polio Age Groups
Received Atonday, 7 p.in. LONDON, August 2. Speaking at the opening of the first world eonference upon poliomyelitis, in New York, Dr. Albert Sabin, Professor of Research Pediatrics at thc University of Cincinnati, said poliomyelitis was today affecting more youths and adults ihan infants. In 1916, for instance, only 3.7 per cent. of polio vietims in the United States were more than 15 years of age. Today the proportion was 25 per cent. A similar trend was observable in other countries, notably -Scandinavia. Professor Sabin said that the cause of this change in the age group .susceptibility, was not knowii but it might be due to some subtle influence — water, soil or diet — which resulted in dilferences in the eonstitutional resistance among persons living .in different regions and environments. Such inflhences were never statie and any given population 's ability to resist the disease, was bound to change with the passage of time. Ex'tensive worldwide surveys were necessary to obtain fur'tlier data on this point.
