■ TIMARU, August A fire of unknown origin gutted the premises of ,Tohn Chainbers and Bon, Lld., Sophia Street, this morning, eausing damage to stoclt estimated at £1*1,000, of which about £S000 is covered by insuranee. The alarm was given from a street box and when the Timaru Fire Brigade arrived soon after, the- roof of the building was on the point of eollapsing and the interior was a raging inferno. The blaze was aggravated by stocks of oil, kerosene and rubber, and four hose deliveries made no impression on the flames. A foam branch pipe was used to quell them. Fears were entertained for the safety of the adjoining premises of John Edmond Limited, but a high triple brick wall prevented the flames from spreading. The heat of the fire affected fhe bricks and the safety of the dividing wall has been impaired. The owners of the building, Mihi# and Bremner, Limited, merchants, of Dunedin, lost a quantity of tobaeco, cigarettes, matches, beer and spirits which was stored in the building.
