Received Fri'day, 10.10 a.rfi.. LONDON, July 22. Washbrook and Hutton regained' their old form fn the fourth test at Leeds today, and Bngland, on a batsman's wick.et,' scored 268 rifns for the loss of two wiekets. ■ ' , ' Washbrook defied the' AustraTian attack qntil five mmutes before the close, when Johnston deceived him with a slow.er leg break, which he edged easily into Lindwall's hands at slipi This dramatic end to an otherWise almost -unblemished century has not lessened England's profound satisfaction aLthe first au'thentically fighting start a team has made in this sef ies;
Hutton, who returned to thei team in his own- county with ai tarnished reputation to regain, made 81, which might have been much less. parnes and Tallon were omitted from the Australian side on accopnt of injuries. Saggers, .reserve wicketkeeper, and Harvey came into the side for their first appearances in a test. Young was dropped from the England eleven, Cranston thus playing in his first test. Emmett was twelfth man. The teams were: — England: -Washbrook, Hutton, Edrich, Oompton, Orapp/ Oranston, y'ardiey, Evans, Bedser, Laker, Pollard. Twelfth man, Emmett. ( Australia: Morris, Harvey, Bradman, Hassett, Miller,- Loxton, Saggers, I. Johnson, Lindwall, W. Johnston, Toshack. Twelfth man, Brown. f The weather was fine and the wicket easy paced. Yardley won the toss and Hutton ' and Wash'brook opened confidently against Lindwall and Miller. Neither was able to get much lift from the Wicket, but with a fairly strong cross wind prevafiing, they were occasionally able to swing the ball awkwardly. A lovely drive by Hutton and a wristy glance . by Washbrook both raced to the boundary. Bradman made quick changes, Miller being replacea by W. Jonnston after sending down two overs, while Lindwall came off after bowl-
ing five overs, Miller being switchs ed" to this end in the apparent hope that the cross wind would suit him be&ter. Toshack was also brought into the attack early. In Johnston's seco'nd over a ball tapped Hutton on the pads, but the appeai was disallowed. The rapidly changed attack caused 'little concern to the batsi men, who moved easily into double figures. After an hpur's play the score reached 43, which represgnted the best opening partnership for England during the present test series. Before lunch Bradman . also brought on Loxton and Johnsoh }h (an unsuccessful attempt to break 'uie partnership. i Details: —
