Trouble With Watersiders At Tokomaru Bay
GISBOBNE, July 21. Tokomaru Bhy watersiders, at a special meeting today, reaffirmed last week 's deeision toTefuse all work ih eoiinection with shipping untij fhe payment of a minimum weekly - wage is restored to them and the Waterfront Tndustry Com-mission elassifies the ships emplojmd to handl,e meat from Tokomaru Bay Works as lighters. The dispute originated in a claim by the workers that the meat ships loading at Tokomaru Bay for transhipment to overseas vessels-at other ports, should be elassifled as lighters, If this elairn suceeeded the men at Tokomaru would have been eligible for a substantial additional hourly payment, provision for which is included in their award to cover lightering to a vessel in a roadstead. This- c-laim was rejected by the Commission which direeted that the watersiders remove the embargo on loading meat out of the freezing works. .This loading out hau been interrupted for some weeks. When the workers, in turn, rejected the deeision of the Commission, the latter authority ruled that tliey were ineligible for tJie weekly payment.
