Bartering Battle Honours For Cash
Received Wednesday, 7.15 p.m. LONDON, July 21. Strong protests were made in the Commons last night against the proposed sale of the cruiser Ajax to Chile. Mr. J. P. L. Thomas, Conservative wartime Secretary to .the Admiralty, recalling the part the Ajax played in the sinking of the Graf Spee, condemned the proposal as "bartering the Navy's battle honours for cash." The Socialist, Captain A. R. Blackburn, said Chile had heen guilty of aggression in establishing a base on British 'territory in the Antarctic. The sale® would thus be construed as condoning aggression. Major Dugdale, Parliamentafy Secretary to the Admiralty, said ho decision was yet made regarding the sale but the points made would no doubt be bome in mind by those considering the matter, as well as [ other considerations.
