.» .' ^ . j ... » ■ i r. :The fortnightly nfeeting; of ;the Shannon Borough Council was-held on Tuesday evening, when the Mayor (Mr. D- Ai Fitzgerald), presided pver Grs.-EL L. Norris, R. S. -Dowffes,' C. M. Cronquest, L. ■ G. Sayer, C. G.' Wishart, and H. Aitch'ison: Apologies for absence were received from Crs. B. 'Clayton and V. J. Bateinan. ' Approval was given for the local girls' marching teams to hold a street stall on September 10. An application was received from the secretary of the Moutoa swamp football tearn for permission to hold a football rnatch between Moutoa and Longburn. Om the motion of the Mayor, the application was granted. A farmer in Bryce Street made application for permission to lay a milk pipe under the road. On the motion of Cr. Aitchison, the application was granted. Notice was received from the district engineer of the Public Works Department regarding the State highway from Levin to Palmerston North, via Shannon. The engineer stated that the Main Highways Board had delegated to the council the whole of the powers conferred by the Main Highways Act, 1922, other than those of maintenance and construction, for the section which lay within the borough. With reg'ard to the allocation of motor taxation ' revenues, the secretary of the Municipal Association advise d that dscussions were proceeding between representatives of boroughs, counties and the automobile associations in an effort to reacn agreement in formulating a request co the Government for a iarger and more equitable share of ohe proceeds of motor taxation. The ietter went on to state that very iew facts were available as to the value of work done on highways in boroughs of a population of under 6000, and the proposition nad been maae that such boroughs snouid receive their share of petrol tax by a direct allocation of money, and snouid -mahitahi all the highways rulinihg • through their .districts themseives. Foiiowing .a discussion, it was t'esolved, on the motion of Cr. Aitchison, to reply stating that the council was satisfied with the present position. Cr. Aitchison reported that he had had a further interview with a Electric Power Board regarding the represeiitative of the Horowhenua street light at *the Balance and Margaret Streets intersection, and the matter was receiving attention. The council agreed that a notice be placed at the local rubbish tip, stating that all rubbish must be placed over the edge. The town cjerk and borough foreman were instructed to seciire ' the :services of a bull'dozer to clean up the "rubbish tip site when one was working in the area. The reserves committee reported that Mr. K. Mitchell, of East Road, had very kindly given a demonstration to the borough foreman on the various methods of pruning trees, and this work was now being carried out in the borough reserves. Cr. Norris, chairman of the library committee; reported on the recent visit to the Otaki Libraxy by the Mayor, Crs. Cronquest, Downes and himself, when they were shown over the library and the free library service operating in that borough had been fully explained. They were very favourably impressed with the lay-out of the Otaki Library. The matter of a free library service for Shannon will be discussed at a later meeting of tfoe council. The chairman of the works committee, Cr. Sayer, reported that work was being carried out to the Thomson Street Bridge and repairs to a culvert at the Vanee Street and Plimmer Terrace intorsactlon. Rerpalrs to a bad hole in Grand Street would be carried out as soon as materials were available
